Base Material News: Thermally Conductive Base Material

For many applications, a reliable heat sink is becoming more and more important.

Not only the high power dissipation of LEDs but also electronic assemblies for engine management systems or inverters require new base material concepts.

Under the designation of "Lambda" Isola has developed a series of MCS laminates that are due to their specific thermal conductivity of up to 15 W/K·m an efficient support of the heat sink.

Basically, these laminates consist of a 1.5 mm thick aluminium clad with copper by use of special prepregs.

This series is complemented by IS450 which is a thermally conductive prepreg.

With 1 W/K·m the thermal conductivity is up by factor 4 compared to the one of standard FR-4 prepreg.

The high thermal reliability of this system is underlined by a Tg of approx. 170 °C, a T260 of more than 60 minutes, and a thermal coefficient of expansion of 35 – 40 ppm/K (RT – Tg).
